ABOUT THE ARTIST
I am a Canadian watercolour painter, textile artist, and writer inspired by the sanctuary of nature. I work with watercolour, natural fibres, birch bark, and found metal; my focus is on landscape from both macro views and micro worlds. The solace I find in Canada’s landscape is paired with awareness that our interrelationship with nature is a profound and fragile privilege.
A lifelong lover of watercolour painting, in recent years I began deconstructing my landscape paintings and engaging directly with natural found elements within the landscape; in this way, I created my ‘constel/lichen’ series, combining stitched work with watercolour on birch bark. Then, realizing how much metal debris I collect on my walks and runs, I began looking more explicitly at humanity’s role in our environmental crisis and to incorporate this rusted metal within my textile/fibre art.
My creative development has included study, practice and teaching of various arts and fibre-related crafts, such as knitting, drawing, sewing, embroidery and bookbinding. My poetry has been published in a variety of journals and collected in my chapbook, Torrent. I hold a BA in English Literature from McGill University, an MA in English and an MIS from the University of Toronto.
I show my art regularly in Ontario and it is held in private collections in Canada, the United States, and the UK. I am happiest making things or being in the woods and I try to spend as much time as possible up north.
